DM launches ‘Grow Your Food’ campaign within World Food Day activities

As part of the World Food Day activities, Eng. Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality on Wednesday has inaugurated the ‘Grow Your Food’ campaign through Facebook with the aim at seeding a culture of freshness and healthy living among the residents of Dubai.

The campaign is organized by the food control department in collaboration with Eastern Masala and Jaleel Holdings under the World Food Day theme ‘Family Farming: Feeding the world, caring for the earth’.

Within the activities, the food control department will launch on ‘World Food Day’ (Thursday) a competition to make vegetable gardens producing healthy vegetables and herbs in one’s own premises. It could be a balcony, rooftop, courtyard or even a small space down the parking lot where one can sow seeds of greenery and freshness to inspire a healthy living through home-made vegetables and herbs.

Eng. Khalid Sherif, director of food control department praised the efforts of Jaleel Holdings, a UAE based supply company with activities in wholesale distribution, metal fabrication and education sectors, for its strong social commitment and focused devotion to the environment promoting only natural products.

‘A committee will be formed to oversee the household farming and assess the best plantations and the winners will be announced in February 2015 in conjunction with the Gulfood,’ he said.

Participants can cultivate various types of fruits and vegetables in their home garden, or even apartments and send its pictures through the campaign’s Facebook page. The jury will select the best 100 images and 10 winners, after a visit the household. Winners will be honored during a ceremony during the National Day celebrations with a certificate and cash prize / coupon worth AED 5000-10000 per person or institution.
