Inspiring youth on World Wetlands Day 2017

Dubai Municipality’s Environment Department directly inspired and motivated 500 students during World Wetlands Day 2017 celebrations by engaging schools and universities in exciting lectures, workshops and field visits.

The theme this year focused on “Wetlands for Disaster Risk Reduction” which is timely and relevant to the current weather events across the globe. Engr.

The Natural Resources Conservation Section (NRCS) of the Environment Department conducted an intensive awareness approach about the role of wetlands in disaster risk reduction in all levels of the primary and secondary schools as well as several universities which included: Second of December School, The Nazwa School, Our Own High School – Al Warqaa, GEMS Our Own Indian School, The Kindergarten Starters School, Cambridge International School, GEMS First Point School, GEMS Westminster School – RAK, American University of Sharjah, Zayed University and Al Ghurair University. The whole month of February was spent in raising the knowledge of students through lectures, workshops and field visits.

The knowledge and awareness that the next generation will garner from these events will be important for our youth to understand the environmental processes that the world is currently undergoing. And by understanding this, the youth will be encouraged to participate in the management of Dubai’s fragile habitat and be passionate about conserving the precious environment.

On the 2nd of February 1971, the Convention on Wetlands was adopted in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. From then on, the date commemorates and celebrates World Wetlands Day. The Environment Department of Dubai Municipality has been in the forefront in celebrating the event for the past 14 years. The celebration highlights the importance of wetlands to humanity, from the ecological services it provides to its economic relevance to any culture around the world.​
