Wetlands Monitoring and Evaluation Workshop 2017

Dubai Municipality officially concludes Wetlands Evaluation and Monitoring Workshop which was organized by the Natural Resources Conservation Section, Environment Department from 5 – 9 November 2017 at the Falcon Heritage and Sports Centre. The 5 days workshop was organized in collaboration with Tour du Valat Research Institute and Satellite-based Wetland Observation Service (SWOS) to introduce new integrative methods and critical tools for monitoring of wetlands by sharing best practices from France and Mediterranean region.
The workshop was attended by 60 participants including government officials, conservation practitioners, academics, relevant local NGOs and other wetlands experts from UAE, who came together to share experiences on the issues related to effective wetlands management.
During the workshop the participants addressed site based issues, integration of Earth Observation (EO) Data and implementation of monitoring plans using practical example of Ras Al Khor Wildife Sanctuary – a wetland of international importance and the first Ramsar site in the UAE. The workshop included a field trip to Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, which gave participants a hands-on experience of identifying the site’s ecological character and an opportunity to implement monitoring techniques learned from the workshop.
