Second place in the Arab Towns Organization Architectural Awards (Al Bastakiya Area Project)
Al Bastakiya area is considered to be the eastern gate of the old city in Bur Dubai. It is also one of the oldest residential areas in the city. Its construction dates back to the 1890s, which confirms its historical value. Dubai Municipality participated in the award and won second place for the Al Bastakiya area project. Eng. Rashad Bukhash, Director of Architectural Heritage Department received the award in the 9th Architectural Award distribution ceremony held at Doha, Qatar on 27 May, 2008.

Cityscape Award 2008
Architectural Heritage Department in Dubai Municipality won international Cityscape Award in the field of Islamic Architecture in 2008. The award was conferred for its excellent efforts for the following projects: Architectural Heritage Department in Dubai Municipality won international Cityscape Award in the field of Islamic Architecture in 2008. The award was conferred for its excellent efforts for the following projects:
1. Restoration of Old Souq in Dubai: It includes the Old Souq in Bur Dubai and Deira as well as the traditional markets.
2. Renovation of Shindagha historical mosques: It includes six historic mosques in the old Shindagha area, which date back to 1896 to 1955. The mosques were maintained and renovated using traditional materials and style considering its historical importance. They are the social and historical record of that period’s society.
3. Restoration of Al Bastakiya Historical Area: The area contains 55 historical buildings that distinguish themselves with their wind towers, enclosures and traditional decorations. The oldest of the houses dates back to 1896 and the latest to 1955. The Architectural Heritage Department carried out the renovation of these houses from 1955 until 2008 at a cost of Dhs50 million.

Third place in the Arab Towns Organization Architectural Awards (Zayed University Project)
The Zayed University Project is located in the flat desert area towards the south of the Emirate of Dubai. It was designed as an oasis that gives a sense of relaxation and receptive feeling. The idea of the project was inspired by the Arab home represented by its inner courtyard which is a nucleus surrounded by different components. The land area of the project is 72.63 hectare. The area covered by buildings consisting of two and three floors is 110,000 Sq metres. The total cost of the project was AED415 million.It took two years to design the project (2002-2004). Construction work took 27 months and ended on 16 November 2006.
