​ What is a barcode, who is responsible for it, and at what stage should I get it?

  • The barcode is a machine-readable product identification code.

Is it necessary to obtain Dubai Municipality's approval to import detergents and biocides into Dubai?

  • The importing company must register the products subject to import and assess them at Dubai Municipality, before applying for  consumer product import and re-export permit, which includes detergents and biocides.
  • You can apply for consumer product registration (Montaji) through this link or by email: montaji-fcm@dm.gov.ae.
  • After confirming the safety of the products and their conformity with the approved health and safety specifications and conditions, and in case of approval, the registration e-certificate is issued through the company’s electronic account in Montaji system, authorizing the company to import the products in question and sell them in local markets. In case of rejection, an assessment report is issued with remarks to be fulfilled.

How can I import children's toys to Dubai?

The importing company must apply for consumer products registration (Montaji) of the products to be imported, with Dubai Municipality, before applying for consumer product import and re-export permit through Dubai Municipality website that covers children’s toys.

  • Required documents include:
    • Customs Declaration
    • Airway bill/Bill of lading
    • Packing list
    • Purchase invoice
    • Trade license issued from the concerned regulatory authorities in the UAE
    • Safety certificate for each toy as per the European standards (EN71)
    • Photo of each toy
    • Other documents or certificates depending on the nature of the consignment.
  • Service fee:
    • AED 100 for each children’s toys consignment application.

How do I import cosmetic products to Dubai?

  • The importing company must register the products subject to import and assess them at Dubai Municipality, before applying for consumer product import and re-export permit, which includes cosmetics.
  • You can apply for consumer product registration (Montaji) through this link or by email:  montaji-fcm@dm.gov.ae.

Can I raise animals in my home?

  • You can only raise domestic and harmless animals (dogs, cats and birds of all kinds) that meet the approved health conditions, by registering the animal in Dubai Municipality system and immunizing it with all required vaccines.
  • It is prohibited to raise production animals (sheep, goats, cows, camels, etc.) in homes, according to Local Order No. (11) of 2003.

How do I import food products into Dubai?

You can import food products into Dubai by following these procedures:

  • Obtain a trade, industrial or professional license from an approved licensing authority in the UAE  with a food-related activity, or a general trade activity.
  • Register the company in e-government:
    • Al Tawar Centre: 042808000
    • Karama Centre: 043374800
  • Register with Dubai ID to obtain a username and password.
  • Register on Dubai Municipality website, using Dubai ID username and password.
  • Submit an electronic application through Dubai Municipality website, select “Food Safety” from the municipality’s many services, and provide a copy of the trade license, stamped with the original company seal.
  • Register in  FIRS (Food Import and Re Export Services) of the Food Trade Control Department.
  • Register in  Zad Federal System.
  • Pay a security deposit of AED 15,000 (refundable) for an unspecified number of consignments, to be refunded upon the company’s request after ensuring that no previous consignments are pending.
  • Import food products through the Federal Zad system only in case of transferring consignments to and from Dubai or registering products.

Activation of FIRS Food Import and Re-export Service:

  • FIRS food import and re-export service can be activated as follows:
    • Submit a copy of the trade license with the contact details of the person appointed by the company to handle the procedure with the Department, at Dubai Municipality – Al Karamah Centre – Express Service Counter – No. 9.
    • Pay the fixed security deposit for the consignments, amounting to AED 15,000 in cash or by certified check from the bank or by credit card (cheques from companies are not accepted) at Dubai Municipality – Al Karamah Centre, phone number: 043374800.

Food Product Registration and Assessment:

  • You can Apply to Register and Assess a Food Item:
    • Submit an electronic application through the Food Import and Re-Export Service (FIRS), with each application containing one item.
    • Attach a clear image of the product and its food label, or provide a sample of the food product to be tested in Dubai Central Laboratory in order to verify the product’s validity and its conformity with the approved conditions and standard specifications (the importing company pays the laboratory test fees).
    • Attach the customs declaration, the packing list, the health certificate issued by a governmental health authority, the Halal slaughter certificate issued by an accredited Islamic authority for meat and meat products.
    • After studying and assessing the food label, the required amendments (if any) are added to the notes field. Then the assessment is approved, the applicant pays the fees and receives the assessment report, followed by the assessment certificate.
  • Fees due for the Registration and Assessment of Food Items:
    • Food Label Approval or Assessment: AED 7 (per label)
    • Food Item Registration without Assessment (FITR): Free
    • Food Item Registration and Label Assessment: AED 7.
