Being the first of its kind in the region, UAE Car Free Day initiative is a significant environmental breakthrough. Its goals are aligned with global environmental agreements and aim at decreasing carbon emissions in Dubai, reduce global warming, spread environmental awareness and foster public transport culture. The initiative is also in line UAE Vision 2021 and the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The initiative was launched in 2010 as an annual event called Car Free Day and held during February. It has evolved over the years to become UAE Car Free Day, attracting annually a wide participation of governmental and semi-governmental entities, private institutions and individuals. This initiative embodies our vision of building a happy and sustainable city and our plans to entrench Dubai’s position as a sustainable global city. We achieve this by encouraging Green Mobility through the use of public transport, which is an important component of protecting the environment and its natural resources and maintaining air quality.
