A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Dubai Municipality Food Safety Department and the JAMK University of Applied Sciences, Finland on Tuesday on the sidelines of the ongoing 12th Dubai International Food Safety Conference (DIFC). 

The agreement was signed by Khalid Sharif Al Awadhi, CEO for Environment, Health and Safety Sector in Dubai Municipality and Minna-Maaria Hiekkataipale, Executive Director, MBA, Tourism and Hospitality Program at the University of JAMK, Finland.

The agreement aims to develop specific, need-based programs in the field of food, with a special focus on food safety, nutrition and sustainability. The areas of cooperation include conducting seminars, study tours, conferences, educational activities and joint development projects. This agreement shall enter into force on the date of its signature.

Al Awadhi said that this university is famous for applied nutrition and food safety, and research on the manufacture of healthy food. “The University supports Finland's efforts to promote community happiness, which is consistent with the State's vision in this field. Our leadership places the happiness of society among its main priorities,” he said.

“Dubai Municipality endeavors to identify and adopt best practices in line with its needs in its various files of its administrative sectors and efforts are on to strengthen its nutrition and food safety programs with the University of JAMK, Finland, which is renowned for its outstanding research in this field,” said Al Awadhi. 

JAMK is an internationally accredited, multi-disciplinary institution of higher education. JAMK offers education in seven fields of study and has over 30 degree programmes. JAMK focuses on practice-oriented research and development work. JAMK’s focus areas are e.g. bio-economy, tourism, applied cyber security and education expertise and business. In addition, nutritional expertise is one of the key competences that JAMK has to offer.

On the other hand, in order to reiterate the role of Dubai Municipality in sponsoring young students and researchers, the Scientific Committee of DIFC has prepared a special program for this group which is ready to receive the flame of science and learning to take it into the future prospects of innovative smart, scientific and practical solutions to meet the increasing challenges in the field of food safety. 

On the sidelines of the conference, for the third time in a row, a specialized exhibition was held to showcase integrated food safety and control solutions from various relevant authorities such as regulatory authorities, food inspection laboratories, training and food consulting companies, presenting latest best practices aimed at finding unconventional responses for various questions and obstacles in this vital area.
