A rumour about a carcinogenic inner coating in granite cooking utensils has spread recently on social media platforms.

The Health and Safety Department of Dubai Municipality confirms that all food-contact materials, including cooking utensils and pots that are either imported or locally manufactured, are subject to strict control and assessment to ensure compliance with the best international safety specifications and requirements. These materials are also sampled and tested to ensure their safety.

Furthermore, the social networking site where the publication was made is not accredited or recognized. Also, there is no scientific evidence that supports the claim that the coating layer on copper cooking utensils made of Teflon and Aluminium, available in the local market, is harmful to the human health. The manufacturing process ensures that the utensils are safe for use according to approved specifications.

Dubai Municipality urges the public to be wary of any rumour regarding consumer products that are sold in local markets.
