With regards to the rumour concerning that laboratory tests were unable to identify tuna meat and find the DNA of tuna in Subway sandwiches.
Food Safety Department’s Response:
After investigating the matter, Dubai municipality confirms that all licensed Subway branches in Dubai use approved tuna products which are imported through regular procedures, including periodic laboratory testing. Also, different brands of tuna are used by Subway restaurants in the Emirate of Dubai.
The owner of the international Subway brand does not oblige Subway restaurant branches in the Emirate to use a specific brand of tuna. However, the branch is free to use suitable tuna in the sandwiches that are prepared.
Therefore, tuna products used in Subway branches are different from each other, which confirms that there is no exclusivity of a specific tuna brand.
In conclusion, Dubai Municipality confirms that all tuna products traded in the emirate meet the approved specifications and standards, including the tuna used in Subway restaurants and other restaurants or retail stores.
