Dubai Municipality and FAO sign MoU to improve agri-food systems and food safety
Dubai Municipality and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation in improving agri-food systems, nutrition, healthy diets, and food safety, with aims to support the UAE’s National Agenda and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The MoU was signed during the World Governments Summit 2025, hosted in Dubai from 11 to 13 February under the theme ‘Shaping Future Governments’. It was signed by His Excellency Eng. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality, and Dr AbdulHakim Elwaer, Assistant Director-General of FAO for the Near East and North Africa.
It outlines a comprehensive framework to advance sustainable food systems in Dubai by disseminating best practices that improve food production, environmental sustainability, and quality of life. Additionally, it promotes healthy diet campaigns, supports school nutrition and food programmes, and facilitates technical contributions to food safety research and policy development.
H.E. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita reaffirmed the significance of the food sector as a strategic national priority, ensuring comprehensive quality of life and a sustainable future.
He said: “Dubai Municipality is committed to developing a comprehensive and sustainable food system that provides safe and high-quality agricultural and food products while mitigating food risks. The partnership with FAO represents a significant step towards adopting best practices that align with the Sustainable Development Goals, fostering integrated, sustainable, and resilient food systems that promote improved nutrition and food safety.”
Dr AbdulHakim Elwaer emphasised the importance of collaboration with the Dubai Municipality and its role in enhancing sustainable food systems and food security.
He commented: “The agreement strengthens our cooperation in advancing efficient, resilient, and sustainable food systems. Our partnership with the Dubai Municipality enables the exchange of expertise, improving food supply chains, enhancing food safety measures, and increasing resilience to environmental challenges.”
The MoU further establishes a foundation for collaboration on public events and global initiatives related to food safety. It includes FAO’s support for the Dubai World Food Safety Conference and conceptual contributions to international observances such as World Food Safety Day and World Food Loss and Waste Awareness Day.
Dubai Municipality continues to play a leading role in environmental management, health, safety, and food system governance in the emirate. The Municipality is committed to proactively protecting natural resources, strengthening food supply chains, preventing public health risks, and implementing globally recognised safety standards for laboratory testing and food quality certification.
